Here on April 9, 1865, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant.
I knew that much but was fairly unaware of the process involved in the surrender.
Grant wrote the terms of the surrender and Lee agreed to the terms. Grant asked only that the Confederates pledge not to take up arms against the United States. Officers were allowed to keep their side arms and any soldier who owned his horse was allowed to take it home with him.(horses were a very important part of a farm) Grant also paroled all the Confederate troops and printing presses were set up to print passes for the soldiers so they could return home. They printed 30,000 parole passes in two days! It is amazing how such a horrible war was ended with such civility.
Appomattox was just a small farming community at the time of the Civil War. It had a General Store, a tavern, and various other small businesses. There was also a very "fine" home owned by the Mclean family. This is where the treaty was signed.
As we were walking around the grounds of Appomattox, I notice a solitary grave out in the middle of a field

We left Appomattox and went back to spend some time with the girls. As always, they were happy to see us and we took them for a walk. We left again to head to the ballpark. Lynchburg has an Advanced A League ball team call the Lynchburg Hillcats. We got two reserved tickets for $5. What a great deal if you love minor league baseball!
