Saturday in Ontario and Kakabeka Falls

It was 48 degrees when we got up on Saturday morning.  It was chilly inside Lewis so I turned on the fireplace.  We are fairly far north so a nippy September morning makes sense.

It was also foggy so we hung around the RV until the sky cleared.

The fog lifted and we loaded the girls and headed to Kakabeka Falls.  It was only a ten minute ride from the camp so we made the quick trip and headed out on a hike.

akabeka Falls /ˌkækəˈbɛkə/ is a waterfall on the Kaministiquia River, located beside the village of Kakabeka Falls in the municipality of Oliver Paipoonge, Ontario, 30 km (19 mi) west of the city of Thunder Bay.

The falls have a drop of 40 m (130 ft),^[3] cascading into a gorge carved out of the Precambrian Shield by meltwater following the last glacial maximum.^[4]Because of its size and ease of access, it has been consequently nicknamed "the Niagara of the North".

The rock face of the falls and the escarpments along the gorge are composed primarily of unstable shale, and are eroding. These rocks host sensitive flora, and contain some of the oldest fossils in existence, some 1.6 billion years of age.^[4] Due to the fragile rock, going into the gorge below the falls is prohibited.^[5]

The falls are beautiful and the trails offered many good looks.

We were able to get a great hike with so much to look at.  The hike started at the top of the falls, went to the bottom and then back to the top.  Little Annie Belle managed to walk the entire thing.  Penny Lane adds distance with all her weaving and sniffing of trail.  I captured many photos but the wifi here is fairly iffy.  I will keep this blog short.

We returned from out hike and spent the afternoon just enjoying the peacefulness of the camp.  It is incredibly quiet here.  

Rob started the grill and we had some good comfort food.  Pork chops, peas and mashed potatoes.  He loves peas and mashed taters.  As usual, the girls got a bit off the grill and we were all well fed.  I found the Alabama vs USC game on Sirius (no television here) and listened a bit.  

We finished our evening with a Big Bang theory season three DVD.
