I am always up first and when I did wake up, it was just too peaceful to root everyone else out of bed. Rob was snoozing, Penny Lane was snoozing and Annie Belle was snoozing. I decided to to just chill and let everyone rest.

We made our way north and passed through Duluth, Minnesota. All is could think of as we went through the city was the commercial that talks about how comfortable Duluth Trading Company's men's underwear are. I could just picture that cartoon guy pole dancing in his comfortable underwear.

We got through Duluth and got on MN Highway 61. It runs along Lake Superior and is absolutely beautiful.
The views of Lake Superior from the road are amazing.
We drove the highway for a bit and decided to stop at Split Rock Lighthouse. We both needed a bit of lunch before we did anything else. Our risk of hangriness was getting high. After lunch, we decided to have a look.
THE TRAIL DOWN
Split Rock Lighthouse is a lighthouse located southwest of Silver Bay, Minnesota, USA on the North Shore of Lake Superior. The structure was designed by lighthouse engineer Ralph Russell Tinkham and was completed in 1910 by theUnited States Lighthouse Service at a cost of $75,000, including the buildings and the land. It is considered one of the most picturesque lighthouses in the United States.
lit Rock Lighthouse was built in response to the great loss of ships during the famous Mataafa Storm of 1905, in which 29 ships were lost on Lake Superior.[3] One of these shipwrecks, the Madeira, is located just north of the lighthouse.
We started our self guided tour of the lighthouse and surrounding area at the top. We looked inside the lighthouse and at the keeper's home. We were even allowed to climb the stairs to the top. I was fascinated by the mechanism that keeps the lens turning 24/7.
The lens floats on a bearing surface of liquid mercury which allows near frictionless operation. The lens is rotated by an elaborate clockwork mechanism that is powered by weights running down the center of the tower which are then reset by cranking them back to the top.[5] When completed, the lighthouse was lit with an incandescent oil vapor lamp that burned kerosene.walk to the top of the lighthouse. I was fascinated by the mechanism that keeps the light turning 24/7.

We finished looking and went back to get the girls so that they could hike the trail down to Lake Superior. The lower trail led us to the shore and a beautiful view of the lighthouse.

We left the lighthouse and made our way to Portage, MN. We are seven miles from the Canadian border. We will cross on Friday and we will spend a few days in Thunder Bay.
We are camped with a view of Lake Superior. We had a good walk with the girls and it was a windows open cool evening.
Another great day in this thing we call life.
