Our next planned stop was Amarillo, Texas. We had driven through Amarillo on our way to Utah but we did not stop. On this trip, we had Lewis so....
As Rob was checking out the things to do in and around Amarillo, he came across a suggestion for Palo Duro Canyon State Park.
Palo Duro Canyon is a canyon system located in the Texas Panhandle near the cities of Amarillo and Canyon. As the second-largest canyon in the United States, it is roughly 120 mi (190 km) long and has an average width of 6 mi (9.7 km), but reaches a width of 20 mi (32 km) at places. Its depth is around 820 ft (250 m), but in some locations, it can increase up to 1,000 ft (300 m). Palo Duro Canyon has been named "The Grand Canyon of Texas" both for its size and for its dramatic geological features, including the multicolored layers of rock and steep mesa walls similar to those in the Grand Canyon.
After doing a little more research, we decided to leave Oklahoma a day early and make our way to the state park. Rob went through the online reservation system and was able to get us a spot. We could have stayed in Amarillo and driven to the park but it is about 40 miles from the RV park in Amarillo the state park entrance. We thought staying onsite might be more interesting.

The Saturday weather was nasty. It misted all day. The temps were in the 40s and it was really damp. We do not mind traveling on days like this. We did not need the AC and we did not feel like we were missing anything by being in the motorhome driving.
We arrived at the park entrance, paid our fees, unhooked Clark and made our way to the camp. The drive into the canyon was a little creepy. It was a two lane road full of steep, curvy turns. I will have to say that I was glad to be following in Clark.
We got set up and did a little exploring.

We got a good walk and decided to head back to the RV. It was close enough to dark that we figured inside was the place to be. There are many trails for hiking but they would have to wait until Sunday.
We spent the rest of the evening tucked into our warm little space.
