Moving day and Lake Powell

Monday was moving day.

We'd had a wonderful stay at the Las Vegas Motorcoach resort but we were ready to move on to something new.

Our destination was Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.  GCNRA is quite large so we had chosen a campground at Lake Powell.

The drive from Vegas to GCNRA started on the Interstate 15 but eventually took us to good two lane roads through some beautiful scenery.  One particularly amazing stretch of highway took us through The Virgin River Gorge.

The Virgin River Gorge, located between St. George, Utah, and Beaver Dam, Arizona, is a long canyon that has been carved out by the Virgin River in northwest Arizona. The Virgin River rises on the Colorado Plateau and created the topography of both Zion National Park and the Virgin River Gorge. The Gorge connects the southwestern rim of the Colorado Plateau and the northeastern part of the Mojave Desert.

Interstate 15 runs through the canyon and crosses the Virgin River several times. The Virgin River Gorge section of Interstate 15 is one of the most expensive parts of interstate highway ever constructed. Due to the winding of the canyon, the highway within is also noted for its tricky driving conditions.  Driving conditions were a bit tricky but keeping the rig at a reasonable speed did the trick.

The scenery is beautiful.  I cannot imagine how much rock they had to move to get this highway built.

This portion of the drive was, by far, the trickiest but the pilot did well.  His co-pilots offered great support.

The rest of our ride was scenic and peaceful.  The terrain offered some green in the valleys and the color really offset the towering mountains around us.

Our drive from took us from Nevada to Arizona to Utah to Arizona back to Utah then back to Arizona.  To enter the campground, we edged back into Utah but our site is in Arizona.  BTW....Arizona does not do daylight savings time.....what time is it?

Our campsite is awesome!  We have a front window view of Lake Powell and we can walk to the Lake.

Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border between Utah and Arizona (most of it, along with Rainbow Bridge, is in Utah). It is a major vacation spot that around two million people visit every year. It is the second largest man-made reservoir by maximum water capacity in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,069 acre feet (3.0000830×1010 m3) of water when full. However, due to high water withdrawals for human and agricultural consumption, and because of subsequent droughts in the area, Lake Powell is currently larger than Lake Mead in terms of volume of water currently held, depth and surface area.  Lake Powell is also running around 100 feet below full capacity but it is beautiful.  We will spend nine days here and we plan to do lots of exploring.

We got set up, waited an hour or so for the temps to cool and then we took the girls for a walk.  Penny Lane knew there was water in the area so she was more that ready.  We made our way to the lake and she got in a good game of stick.

With the girls well exercised, we returned to the RV and I made spaghetti for dinner.  It was not my slow cook all day spaghetti but it was still delicious.  

We'd had a good drive, we had an amazing camp site and we were full and happy.
