We had beautiful weather so after dropping Rob at the airport, I got back to the RV and took Penny for a run. We had our run, the girls had breakfast and I decided to head to the beach for a walk. The Pensacola beaches have beautiful white sand and the water is lovely. I found a few cool shells and decided to save a few for the RV.
Rob returned from his trip and we spent a very windy Friday just taking it easy in the RV.
Saturday was moving day for us. Our departure was planned but we almost got side tracked by an annual event called the Two Bridges Run.
The Two Bridges Run is a very popular 15K run that includes running over two local bridges. The first bridge is over three miles long and the second bridge takes runners right to the barrier island where we were staying. When Rob and I found out the specifics, we briefly considered running the race. We were not really 15k ready but figured we could gut it out. I did decide to check out the the weather for race day and that is when we quickly decided that we did not need to participate.
By Saturday morning, the wind was howling and it was 38 degrees. We got away from the campground before 0600 and the bridges were already single lane and the winds were gusting. I am sure the Two Bridges Run is pretty cool under most conditions but not this time.
We made our way out of Pensacola and quickly crossed the state line of Alabama. We rode along a seven mile bridge and came to a tunnel that runs under the Mobile River. The idea of driving through a tunnel with Lewis and Clark was a little intimidating but we decided to go for it.
Our destination was Kemah, Texas. We had a week reservation at Marina Bay RV Resort. The drive was 500+ miles so we planned a stop along the way. We had originally planned to stop at a Flying J truck stop but Rob found a casino in Lake Charles, LA that had 8 spots for RVs. They offered power hook ups and access to the resort facilities for only $20. We decided to go with that so that we wouldn't have to use the generator for power and so we could use the fitness center and spa.
The trip was interesting. We quickly made our way through AL and MS and found ourselves on I10 in Louisiana. The I10 corridor through Louisiana has quite a bit of wet lowlands. There is a particular area that was planned to handle flooding from the Mississippi River called The Atchafalaya Basin.
The Atchafalaya Basin system comprises three floodways. Two of these, the West Atchafalaya Floodway and the Morganza Floodway, are at the northern end. Together with the Atchafalaya River, these floodways are designed to pass flood waters into the third component, the Lower Atchafalaya Basin Floodway, which is 833,000 acres (3,370 km2) in size and is bounded on the north by U.S. Route 190, on the east and west by the Atchafalaya Basin protection levees, and on the south by the Gulf of Mexico.[2] Farther downstream, floodwaters enter the Gulf of Mexico through the Atchafalaya River below Morgan City, Louisiana and the Wax Lake Outlet.

When travelers get to the Basin, the road elevates and the "bridge" runs for 18.2 miles. The area looks very swampy and wild. We also drove over quite a few tall bridges.
The last tall bridge for the day got us to our exit for the casino. We made our way to the lot, checked in and got Lewis parked for the night. We did not do much setup but we had everything we needed.
We took the girls for a walk and then Rob and I decided to go into the casino to have a look. We are not gamblers by nature but we will occasionally put a $20 into a video poker machine. We found a non smoking area and played a bit. We cashed out with a profit of $5.50 and went back to the RV for the evening.
We watched a little TV and decided to turn in early. We had spent a fairly long day on the road so we were tired.
Another great day in this thing we call life.
