Kemah to New Braunfels Texas

We finished our week in Kemah with a couple more hikes and some down time.

Kemah is probably much busier in the spring and summer but February seemed to be a fairly quiet month.  I would imagine that boating is very high on the list of activities.  There were lots of very large marinas and they were full of boats.  Sailboats seemed to be the vessel of choice.

Penny and Annie got to go on our hikes with us and we took some time on Friday to visit Challenger 7 Memorial Park.

In 1986, Commissioner El Franco Lee named Challenger Seven Memorial Park in honor of the seven NASA astronauts who lost their lives in the explosion of the Challenger Space Shuttle. Located in the park, is a monument commemorating the loss of these heroes.

The park consists of 300 acres of wetlands, trails, picnic areas, fishing ponds and sports fields.

We parked and decided to take a good loop hike.  One of the first things we came across was this sign.
The wild hogs must be prevalent because we saw these signs everywhere.  We kept Penny Lane and Annie on short leashes and made our way down the trail.  The trails were not well marked but they were well used so we had an easy time of it.  There were a couple of boardwalks that allowed us to go over a few of the more boggy areas.

We completed our hike and did not see any wild hogs.  We did see a few deer and a few hikers.  Penny Lane was one happy girl when we got back to the car.

POST HIKE PENNY

On Saturday, we took a drive into Houston and visited Rob's Uncle John and Aunt Janet.  John is Sam's brother and he lives in an assisted living facility in the area.   John reminded me of Sam.  They have the same easy smile and pleasant disposition.
ROB AND JOHN CARR

We enjoyed our visit with John and his wife Janet and headed back to Lewis and the girls.

When we got back, we took the girls for a walk and then did some outside prep work.
Sunday was moving day.

We were up and away before 0800 on Sunday.  We were headed to New Branufels, TX.  NB is not too far from San Antonio, TX.

New Braunfels was established in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, Commissioner General of the Adelsverein, also known as the Noblemen's Society. Prince Solms named the settlement in honor of his home of Solms-Braunfels, Germany.

We found our RV park and got Lewis set up.  Rob had picked a place for us to take the dogs for a hike so we got them ready and headed out.

Our destination was Landa Park.

Landa Park is a very nice, very family oriented park in New Braunfels.  It hosts trails, play areas, lakes and many other activities for visitors.  It is very well kept and it seems to be well used.

We started our hike and were headed to Panther Canyon.  This trail is well marked and well used but was not busy.  Penny went in nose to the ground and had a great time of it.  Annie Belle started off strong but tired after a bit.

Our hike took us up the canyon and back down to Comal Springs.  The springs come right our from under a ledge and then run into a creek.

The water is crystal clear and nice and cold.  Some of the stream area is protected for environmental purposes so Penny Lane was not allowed to swim in the area pictured above.  The stream did run into a larger creek and then a lake and Penny was able to take a dip.

We'd had a nice time of it and decided it was time to get back to the RV.   We had plans for the evening and we needed time to get cleaned up.

Rob's dad Sam is from Texas and most of his family is there.  Sam joined the Army during WWII and, like many service members,  spent the rest of his career moving from one place to another.  He never really called Texas home again and Rob did not get to spend much time with his aunts, uncles and cousins.

We had decided, that while we were making our journey west, we would stop in Texas and see some of his family.

On Sunday evening, we met Rob's Aunt Audrey and cousins David and Mary and their families.  We had agreed to meet at a local San Antonio restaurant.  We had a total of around 12 show up and it was really nice.  We had dinner and chatted about family.  It was nice for me to finally be able to put faces to names.  We left the restaurant feeling much more connected to Rob's family.

We got back to the RV park and settled in for the evening.

Our Sunday had been full.  Our travels had been safe.

Another great day in this thing we call life.
