When Iowa farmer Ray (Kevin Costner) hears a mysterious voice one night in his cornfield saying "If you build it, he will come," he feels the need to act. Despite taunts of lunacy, Ray builds a baseball diamond on his land, supported by his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan). Afterward, the ghosts of great players start emerging from the crops to play ball, led by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson. But, as Ray learns, this field of dreams is about much more than bringing former baseball greats out to play.
The set for the movie is located in Dyersville, Iowa. We had always wanted to go see it but it wasn't really family vacation material.
As we were planning our departure from Minnesota, we decided to go through Iowa and and see the set.
We left Minnesota on Monday and made our way south. We drove through miles and miles and miles of farm land.

We had a good drive and arrived at our campground near Dyersville. We had a beautiful site and our view was so pretty. We took the girls for a good walk and then went to dinner at a local eatery. It is fun walking in to small local diners and restaurants. The head swivel is very noticeable but the locals are almost always nice.
During all this, I had been watching the progress of Hurricane Matthew. Rob's dad is in assisted living on an east coast barrier island and we have a house in the same area. We started watching the maps very closely.
We decided to go for a run and let things develop a bit more before we made any changes to our plans.

We had a great run and when we got to the car, we looked at the most current storm model. Based on what we saw, we decided to quickly break camp and head south to an airport so that Rob could fly out Wednesday morning.
Our Field of Dreams would have to wait.
We were packed and ready in less than an hour and we were headed to Nashville. We had 600 miles to go to get Rob to the airport Wednesday morning. We would never choose to travel this far in Lewis in one day. We try to keep our drives to less that 250 miles in one day but these were extenuating circumstances.
We drove well past dark and stopped about 50 miles outside Nashville. We grabbed about 3 hours of sleep and then drove on in. I dropped Rob off and he was on his way. I got situated and started my solo trek south. I had the girls and Lewis with Clark in tow.
There is a good lesson in this. When we started traveling, I told Rob that we both needed to know how to drive the RV with Clark in tow. It doesn't sound like much but a 38ft motor home with a Honda CRV in tow, makes for a lengthy bit of machinery. It is easy to allow ourselves to fall into a routine in which he does this and I do that. We did not want that to happen when it came to driving. Just in case.
Wouldn't you know it....just in case happened. We already had a plan and we got a call that the barrier islands were under mandatory evacuation. Rob was on his way to get his dad and they would be going to Orlando to a hotel. I, on the other hand, had this rig that needed to continue to move south. It was dark, I was in Nashville, TN and there was traffic. It would not have been a very pleasant first time driving experience.
So glad I spent time getting to know how to drive Lewis and Clark.
